GIF Compressor

Animated GIFs are notorious for ballooning in file size. A 5-second screen recording can easily hit 10MB, which is over Slack's GIF preview limit, breaks email attachments, and tanks page load times. Our free online GIF compressor solves this by re-encoding the GIF with a smaller color palette and (optionally) reduced dimensions — the two levers that actually matter for GIF size.

The tool is built on ImageMagick, the same engine professional image pipelines use. Under the hood, it reads every frame of your animated GIF, applies palette quantization to reduce the number of unique colors (which is the single biggest contributor to GIF file size), and optionally downscales the dimensions. The animation, timing, and loop behavior are fully preserved — you get the same GIF, just lighter.

Four presets — Light, Balanced, Strong, and Extreme — cover the most common use cases, from preserving near-original quality to aggressively shrinking files for chat apps. If you need finer control, the Colors slider (8–256) and Scale slider (25–100%) let you dial in the exact tradeoff between file size and visual quality. Smaller color counts produce smaller files but introduce banding; lower scale values cut file size dramatically without affecting colors.

Your GIFs are processed in memory on our servers and immediately discarded — they are never stored, indexed, or shared. The tool supports animated GIFs up to several MB, which covers virtually every screen recording, reaction GIF, and looping animation you're likely to compress.
